Dimitar Berbatov believes Sergio Romero’s wife should not have publicly expressed her annoyance at his failed Manchester United exit and that he should have kept the matter private between himself and the club.

Romero’s future appeared away from Old Trafford after Dean Henderson returned from his loan spell at Sheffield United to provide competition between the sticks.

Despite interest from Everton, Romero was unable to leave the club and he is now set to spend the first half of the season as United’s third-choice goalkeeper.

His wife, Eliana Guercio, took to Instagram to slam United’s treatment of her husband.

‘Sergio Romero worked hard for this club,’ she wrote.

‘Last trophy they won, they lifted it with him.

‘He helped the team reach 4 finals/ semifinals and then he was left on the bench only to lose them all.

‘It is time for them to return the opportunity and let him go.

Former Red Devils striker Berbatov is convinced that her outburst was a mistake and that there were ‘better ways to handle this’.

And he advised Romero to accept his situation and keep such matters private in future.

‘I saw Romero’s wife demand a move away, and unless a wife is a player’s agent, I have always disliked this kind of thing,’ Berbatov told Betfair.

‘Sergio is a grown man and can speak for himself.

‘I understand as the closest person to him, she will want to stand up for him, but for him, there are better ways to handle this.

‘He needs to go and speak to the club himself, and not have his wife to do it.

‘It is difficult for Sergio, he is an excellent keeper but realistically he is third choice at the club now.’
