Dimitar Berbatov has likened Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay to Frank Lampard and believes he will someday captain the club.

McTominay was on the spot to score another vital goal for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side against West Ham United on Tuesday night, reacting superbly to drive home Marcus Rashford’s knockdown to send his side into the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The Scotland international, who played up front for a spell while playing for United’s Under-23 side, has scored seven goals in all competitions this season with former United striker Berbatov likening his ability to drift into the box to Blues legend Lampard.

‘It’s great to see Scott McTominay doing so well,’ Berbatov told Betfair.

‘His goal against West Ham in the cup reminded me of the kind of goals that Frank Lampard would score, coming late into the box and smashing it into the net with a great finish.’

McTominay was named United captain for the first time in the FA Cup third round win over Watford, scoring the winner that sent his side through.

Berbatov sees the 24-year-old as a long-term option in that role – but is wary of comparisons to players the Bulgarian played alongside during his time at Old Trafford.

‘He is becoming a strong force in the middle of the park. I remember at one point he wasn’t playing many games and I was wondering what was happening with him, but now he is back and I’m happy for him.

‘Although he’s still young, I see him as a future United captain one day.

‘A lot of people are comparing him to Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick, but lets not jump to conclusions and compare.

‘McTominay will want to be known for his own game and, while I’m sure he will be flattered by those comparisons, leave him to play his football and enjoy what he does on the pitch. I’m happy that he is producing good football and scoring goals.’
