Argentina legend Diego Maradona is set to undergo emergency surgery on a subdural hematoma on Tuesday evening in Buenos Aires.

The 60-year-old was in hospital – the Ipensa clinic in La Plata – on Monday due to anaemia and dehydration and had thought to be recovering well, but his doctor has confirmed that he must undergo the operation, reports Sky Sports.

The operation is to deal with a blood clot after blood collection between the skull and the brain’s surface.

Maradona’s doctor Leopoldo Luque told Ole: ‘Diego is lucid, he agrees with the intervention, I explained it to him. He is very calm. It is a routine surgery.

‘Most of the patients who have this haematoma are old. The outlook did not change. Diego remains the same. He continues with the same clinical condition, with a more specific cause.’

The former Napoli and Barcelona man, who led his country to World Cup glory in 1986, had been self-isolating after one of his bodyguards showed symptoms of coronavirus.

Maradona is still in charge of Argentinian side Gimnasia de La Plata, where he has been since September 2019, having previously been at UAE side Fujairah and Mexican outfit Dorados in recent years.

He has had numerous health issues over the last 20 years, having surgery in January last year due to internal bleeding in his stomach caused by a hernia.
