David Warner insists he is ‘really proud’ after Sunrisers Hyderabad beat Mumbai Indians to qualify for the Indian Premier League play-offs.

Hyderabad needed a victory over Mumbai to pip Kolkata Knight Riders to the final play-off spot and produced a superb performance to thrash the defending champions by 10 wickets.

Sandeep Sharma (3-34), Jason Holder (2-25) and Shahbaz Nadeem (2-19) all impressed with the ball for Sunrisers to restrict league leaders Mumbai to 149-8.

Warner (85*) and Wriddhiman Saha (58*) then shared a brilliant opening stand to knock off the runs with 17 balls to spare and set up a knockout match against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Sunrisers captain Warner said: ‘To restrict Mumbai to 150 – especially on this ground – was outstanding. I’m really proud of the bowlers and the whole team.

‘We’ve got nothing to lose now. We need to win three more games in a row but if we can take this performance and momentum into the knockouts, you never know.

‘Bangalore are a great team, very well led by Virat [Kohli]. They’ve got a lot of danger in their side. They will be ultra competitive. It’s a do-or-die game for both teams and I’m really excited for it.’

Despite their defeat, Mumbai still finished top of the IPL group stage and will have two shots at a place in the final.

Captain Rohit Sharma said: ‘This is not a day we want to remember, it’s probably the worst performance of the season for us.

‘We wanted to try a few things but unfortunately it didn’t go our way. Losing wickets at the top doesn’t help.

‘We need to leave this performance behind you as quickly as possible. We will get back to the drawing board tomorrow.’

Mumbai Indians face Delhi Capitals in their semi-final clash in Dubai on Thursday.
