Southampton star Danny Ings has reportedly rejected a new contract at St Mary’s amid speculation Manchester United are interested in signing the striker this summer.

Ings’ current deal is due to expire in 2022 and there has been uncertainty growing surrounding the 28-year-old’s future, with the Saints yet to make any progress regarding a possible extension.

United have been closely monitoring the situation and recently made an enquiry for Ings as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to add quality to his attacking ranks after finally landing Jadon Sancho and tying down Edinson Cavani for further 12 months.

Manchester City are also said to be keen on the England international, who finished last term as Southampton’s top scorer with 13 goals in all competitions despite missing much of the campaign through injury.

According to The Athletic, both Manchester clubs could have a realistic chance of landing Ings this summer, with the forward’s contract talks still at an impasse.

Money is not thought to be an issue for Ings but the ex-Liverpool attacker is hoping for another shot with an elite team competing for major honours after his disappointing, injury-ravaged three-year spell on Merseyside.

It means Southampton may be forced to decide whether to cash in on Ings this summer of risk losing him on a free transfer at the end of next season.

Recent reports suggested the Saints could be willing to sell Ings should they receive an offer of between £25-30million for his signature over the coming weeks.

‘I’ve got a contract until the summer of 2022,’ Ings told talkSPORT when asked about his future in May.

‘I haven’t really acknowledged them [transfer rumours].

‘I’ve just been focused on each game. Ultimately, I’ve still got a contract here.

‘My main focus is to finish the season strong.’

Southampton head coach Ralph Hasenhuttl has made it clear he intends to keep hold of Ings for the forthcoming season and the club will only allow their prized possession to leave if they have a ready-made replacement lined up.

Dimitar Berbatov has been surprised by the rumours linking Ings with United as he feels his former club already have ‘pretty much everything’ they need up front after Cavani signed a new deal.

‘Ings is a good player and I really rate him but I don’t think he is what United need at the moment,’ the Bulgarian told Betfair.

‘The club have pretty much everything they need in the striking department at the moment, lots of experience and pace.

‘Edinson Cavani keeps scoring, proving his worth and proving how good a decision it was to give him a contract extension, he scored an unbelievable goal the other day.

‘So, with all this in mind going for Danny Ings makes no sense to me.’
