Danilo OUT of World Cup 2018 after Brazil star suffers ankle injury on eve of Belgium quarter-final

Brazil have been dealt a hammer blow on the eve of their World Cup quarter-final with Belgium.

Manchester City defender Danilo has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament with an ankle ligament injury.

Brazil confirmed Danilo had picked up the injury in training less than 24 hours before the showdown with Roberto Martinez’s men.

He will play no further part in the tournament but will remain with the rest of the squad in Russia as they look to win their first World Cup since 2002.

Brazil remain the favourites for the tournament but the news will come as a major blow to Tite.

Danilo in action

Danilo has been Brazil’s first-choice right-back in Russia after Dani Alves picked up an injury before the tournament.

Fagner deputised for him for the win over Mexico in the last-16 victory and will now keep his place for the quarter-final.

There is some better news for boss Tite with Marcelo set to return for Friday’s quarter-final.

Marcelo picked up a back injury in the Group E win over Serbia but has recovered and is likely to replace Filipe Luis.
