Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa: Rangnick reaction

Monday’s 1-0 win over Aston Villa in the FA Cup was a timely one for Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick.

While the team were far from their best at Old Trafford, the win was enough to keep the team’s most realistic chance of a trophy alive at the start of 2022.

Improvements will be needed if that chance is to turn into reality and this week attentions will turn back to the Premier League when United visit Villa Park for what promises to be a feisty occasion after Monday’s encounter.

Here are the latest United headlines after that important triumph, with Rangnick seeking to build some early momentum in his tenure.

Ronaldo confusion

Cristiano Ronaldo was left out of the Manchester United squad on Monday for the FA Cup third round clash with Aston Villa, with Rangnick citing some minor problems for the veteran forward.

The former Real Madrid and Juventus man has struggled to show his best form in recent weeks, although he has started all of the Premier League games since Rangnick took charge. He is expected to be available for the trip to Villa on Saturday too.

Given his apparent injury issue, fans were surprised to see Ronaldo post an image of himself back in Portugal on Tuesday morning on social media.

All eyes will now be on United training on Wednesday to see how much of a part the forward plays.

New transfer option emerges for Lingard

According to reports, Tottenham Hotspur are serious contenders in the race to sign United’s out-of-favour midfielder Jesse Lingard.

Lingard was excellent on loan at West Ham United in the second half of last season and although he stuck around with the Red Devils for this term, he has been unable to secure regular minutes under both Rangnick and his predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

With Lingard out of contract at the end of the season, his days at United do appear to be numbered.

Having done so well at West Ham last term there is said to be renewed interest from them again, although Antonio Conte and Tottenham may provide stiff competition for his signature.

McClaren hits out at Rashford

Former Manchester United coach and ex-England manager Steve McClaren has questioned the “attitude” of Marcus Rashford.

The forward has struggled for form this season and frustration at his performances is beginning to build at Old Trafford.

Rashford’s efforts were subject to frequent groans from the supporters against Villa on Monday and McClaren thinks the England international needs to change his mentality to get them back onside.

“I hate that attitude in a player,” said McClaren. “Body language is so, so important and that was the criticism of United players in the last few weeks.

“But Rashford has probably had this problem throughout his career, in terms of questioning his attitude.”
