A fleet of up to six helicopters has been spotted cruising over London ahead of Donald Trump’s visit
The aircraft are believed to be V22 Ospreys and have been seen across the north of the capital.
Left-wing commentators Owen Jones and Paul Mason both joked that a ‘military coup’ was underway as images of the helicopters began to circulate on social media.
‘Two V-22 Ospreys just flew low over London,’ Mason tweeted. ‘Trump’s advance guard or Boris Johnson-led military coup?’
On Twitter, people claimed to have seen the ‘eerie’ flying machines hovering low in the sky above Regents Park.
Steve, a Metro reader, also spotted a fleet of six Ospreys followed by one helicopter over Kidlington, Oxford, which circled then headed east.
President Trump is due to touchdown on Thursday afternoon but will avoid London to dodge the estimated 100,000 people expected to protest against him.
‘Is anyone else in London hearing Trump’s helicopters over London?’ one Twitter user asked.
‘Almost just grabbed my phone to run away from the flat, sounded like it was landing on my flat.’
Ospreys are known to be used by American forces and are capable of vertical takeoff.
