Three players at the ongoing Betsy Obaseki Women Football tournament in Edo State have tested positive to COVID-19. They were among the 14 cases within the past 24 hours.
Wife of the governor, Betsy Obaseki, declared the maiden tournament opened on Monday evening at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium in Benin City.
Permanent Secretary Edo State Ministry of Health, Dr. Osamwonyi Irowa, said this while addressing journalists during the daily briefing on COVID-19 at the Government House on Wednesday in Benin City.
He said three deaths and 16 recoveries were recorded in addition to 394 samples that were collected for laboratory test within the same period.
Head of the state’s COVID-19 case management, Dr. Ebomwonyi Osagie, also affirmed the cases on the athletes who tested positive to COVID-19.
“On the Betsy Obaseki tournament, all the athletes had been screened. The number we saw in terms of the test we saw within 24 hours included three persons who are athletes in the ongoing tournament. So, we screened all of them before they entered the field of play.
“At the stadium there we have vaccination team and for all those who are yet to be vaccinated, try to do the needful,” he said.
