If there’s ever a time for true excess on the hair and make-up front, it’s at the biannual couture shows. Shimmer and sparkle were the focus at Givenchy spring/summer 2019, with Pat McGrath putting the Kirakira app to good use with the glittering faces she created backstage. Applied from the hairline down to just below the eyes, the high-octane sparkle made the models appear almost like rather fabulous superheroes. Those who didn’t wear the full glitter look sported glowing, highlighted skin, bejewelled hair accessories and pearl-adorned headbands.
At Iris Van Herpen, Martin Cullen dipped blunt fringes into coloured paint, including a sparkling copper which popped when set against the matt complexions by Terry Barber. And whilst the Elie Saab collection really provided enough sparkle on its own, models wore metallic eyeshadow to complement the sequin embellishment, liquid-gold gowns and jewelled veils on the catwalk. Even at Dior, where make-up was limited to a monochrome palette, models sported glittering swimming caps in gold, black, silver and red, glinting under the circus lights in the tent constructed by the French fashion house especially for the show.
And whilst Pat McGrath steered away from glitter at Valentino, opting instead for dramatically feather-adorned lashes and painted flower eye make-up, it was a high-shine lip – applied in the Lust Gloss hues from her eponymous make-up collection – which completed the look. So when it comes to beauty this spring, shine on.
