Conor McGregor teases Man Utd offer amid European Super League collapse

Conor McGregor teased that he is exploring the possibility of buying Manchester United as chaos continues to unfold at Old Trafford.

United were due to be one of 12 ‘Founding Clubs’ of the breakaway European Super League – but proposals began to unravel on Tuesday night when fellow founders Chelsea and Manchester City prepared to withdraw their involvement.

The Red Devils faced huge criticism from fans, politicians, players and club legends over their decision to help set up the new competition.

And in the face of the backlash, Ed Woodward decided to resign from his role as United’s executive vice-chairman.

The European Super League saga has laid bare the huge schism between the values of United supporters and those of United’s owners, the Glazer family.

But one man who can relate to the fans is boyhood Red Devil and UFC superstar McGregor, who hinted at an audacious offer to buy the club.

The Irishman took to Twitter to write: “Hey guys, I’m thinking about buying Manchester United! What do you think?”

McGregor opened up on his affiliation with United in an interview with Manchester United’s official website earlier this year, recalling his memories of watching his compatriots Roy Keane and Denis Irwin with Sir Alex Ferguson in the dugout.

Would you like to see Conor McGregor buy Manchester United? Have your say in the comments.

He said: “I was more a player than a watcher back then, but Manchester United was my team. It was only the other day I came across an old picture of myself wearing that infamous grey United jersey, which I bought with my [First Holy] Communion money at eight years of age.

“I see my son when I look at that photo. I’d love to know where it is now. A truly ‘Notorious’ football jersey!

“I was attracted to the success and winning mentality of the club and people surrounded by United. Irish legends like Denis Irwin and Roy Keane were dedicated to their craft and had that winning mentality.

“Roy Keane was one of the best midfielders European football has ever seen. Opponents would be mentally beaten before they’d even stepped on to the pitch to face him.

“Then they had the don of football at the helm, the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson. To have that much success over such a long period is remarkable and something I continue to aspire to.”
