Coldplay have revealed they have written five unreleased Bond themes – having never developed the courage to actually send the tracks of to the film makers for consideration.

The band – consisting of Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion – claim they wrote tracks for five films spanning the past 20 years.

While it is unclear if the band hoped to release a Bond theme for all of Daniel Craig’s Bond outings – or if one of the five over the past 20 years would include Piers Brosnan’s final outing – they tracks ultimately never made the cut for the films.

And while the band toiled away creating the music, they ultimately chickened out of sending the tunes to Bond bosses as they realised they weren’t good enough.

Lead singer Chris, 44, told NME: “We kept trying to write one for 20 years, but never submitted them.

“We have Bond themes for about five movies, but they’re not very good, to be honest.

“I don’t know if we’re spiritually on the same trip as James. As much as I like the films, I don’t know if us singing would do it for him.

“He’d be like, ‘That’s not what I’m into at all, fellas. I like guns and s**t. All this hippie stuff just isn’t going to work’.”

The most recent Bond film, No Time To Die, had the theme performed by American pop star Billie Eilish, while the previous film, Spectre, had a theme song called Writing’s on the Wall performed by Sam Smith.

Adele sang the title tune for Skyfall, Jack White of The White Stripes and Alicia Keys collaborated on Another Way to Die for the theme of Quantum of Solace, and Chris Cornell performed You Know My Name, the title song of Casino Royale.

Prior to this, Madonna sang the title song for Pierce Prosnan’s final outing as Bond in 2002’s Die Another Day.

If Coldplay do want to record a Bong theme, time is running out – as the band this month announced they have plans to retire.

Speaking to Andy Bush on Absolute Radio on Wednesday, Chris said: “I think that in a few albums time we will finish making albums.

“This is not a joke, this is true, I think after 12 that will be the end of our catalogue, but I think we will always want to play live together.

“So, I think in the way that the Stones do, it will be so cool if we can still be touring in our late 70s. That will be wonderful, if anybody wants to come.”

The band released their ninth studio album Music of the Spheres – which is potentially their fourth last ever record – on Friday.

The album includes the singles Higher Power – which was performed at the Brit Awards earlier this year – and My Universe.
