Dutch Renaissance philosopher Erasmus inspired the name of the European student exchange programme that’s funded millions of students to spend a year or several months in a foreign country. The Erasmus programme was founded in 1987 for university students in the EU. Five years ago it was expanded to include vocational students, as well as teachers and youth workers, under the banner of “Erasmus Plus”.
The new funding for Erasmus Plus has just been announced, with double the budget – some €30 billion for the period from 2021 to 2027 – and the aim of getting 12 million people involved.
In this programme, we find out more about the latest upgrades to Erasmus, what it’s brought to students around the EU, and whether this isn’t just a glorified jolly for a privileged few.
