Christian Pulisic was back in Chelsea training on Thursday as he nears a return from the ankle injury that has kept him out since the opening day of the season.

The American has made just one Premier League appearance so far, starting in the 3-0 win over Crystal Palace in August, but has not been seen since for the Blues, only appearing for his country in September.

The 23-year-old was seen at Cobham on Thursday, though, and will hope for a return to first team action as soon as possible.

Chelsea travel to Newcastle at 3pm on Saturday, which may come too soon for the American, certainly in terms of starting the match, but he will be more hopeful of the trip to Malmo in the Champions League on Tuesday or the visit of Burnley to Stamford Bridge the following weekend.

Thomas Tuchel will be pleased to have another option in attack, with Romelu Lukaku (ankle) and Timo Werner (hamstring) still out injured after picking up their problems in the home meeting with Malmo on 20 October.

The Blues boss only initially ruled them out of the Norwich game in the Premier League and the Southampton meeting in the Carabao Cup fourth round, so it may not be long before the Belgian and the German return, but there has been no sign that they will be in action at Newcastle on Saturday as yet.

The likes of Kai Havertz, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Mason Mount and Hakim Ziyech have been tasked with filling in with Lukaku and Werner out, and results have not suffered.

Norwich were dispatched 7-0 at Stamford Bridge, while Southampton were not so easily dealt with, but Chelsea progressed to the League Cup quarter-finals with a win on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Speaking about Pulisic’s injury on 19 October, Tuchel said: ‘He got injured during the match with the USA, it was a foul, a tough foul, he hurt his ankle,

‘There is nothing to worry about, we are not hiding details. I cannot give you all the details because I am simply not a doctor.

‘At the moment he has some setbacks with pain, not from major injury or complication it’s simply the pain in the ankle that disturbs him.

‘Once these players with quick movements like Christian feel this pain and are not free in their movements recovery is not happening and you start all over again and reach a certain point and then the pain comes back, you do a pause and then start again.

‘Right now we are very, very close. He was already so close to come to team training last week and had a little setback with a reaction because of pain nothing serious.

‘He is very impatient, he does everything. We se him suffer in every meeting when we meet him in our training centre. He is really suffering, he wants to be on the pitch helping us. Unfortunately the injury takes its time.’
