Christian Pulisic has come under fire from the Blue Planet Society, who have accused him of ‘abusing’ a goliath grouper, after posting a bizarre video of him doing kick-ups above the giant fish before falling into the water on top of it.

The 22-year-old was sat on the edge of a boat, showing off his skills with a football while someone else held the huge fish on a line below him and others filmed.

The Chelsea star lost his balance and slipped into the water, causing the goliath grouper to react, clearly in distress.

It wasn’t entirely clear what the point of the weird set-up was, but Pulisic posted the video on Instagram with the caption: ‘Life flashed in front of my eyes🤣What a day on the water with @blacktiph and @emadgg_’

Clearly Pulisic thought this was a harmless bit of fun, dragging himself back onto the boat and laughing about his tumble, but the Blue Planet Society disagree with him, taking it very seriously.

Described as a ‘volunteer pressure group campaigning to end the overexploitation of the world’s ocean,’ they say that Pulisic was in fact abusing the fish which they say is a protected species.

‘Abusing a threatened goliath grouper for a social media video is a new low,’ Blue Planet Society wrote in a tweet.

They added: ‘Well-known professional footballer abuses a threatened goliath grouper for fun.

‘Animal abuse. Protected and endangered goliath grouper — imagine if this was a lion or tiger and you’ll get the idea. #FishAreWildlife.’
