Chris Sutton was impressed by the manner in which Callum Hudson-Odoi responded to his ‘public humiliation’ at the hands of Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel.

Hudson-Odoi was subbed on and then off in the Premier League draw against Southampton by the Blues boss at the weekend, with Tuchel then criticising his effort levels after the match.

The 20-year-old was straight back in the starting line-up, however, in Chelsea’s 1-0 win against La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

And former Chelsea striker thought he put in a good performance considering the circumstances.

‘I think that whole saga was extremely interesting,’ Sutton told BT Sport. ‘I think Callum Hudson-Odoi reacted well last night.

‘There’s always a danger when you sub-sub a player, that’s not a popular move for the players’ union.

‘But it was the public humiliation as much as anything, questioning his attitude.

‘But Callum Hudson-Odoi seems to have taken that well and bounced back well against Atletico.

‘There is always a danger when you call out a player like that, that they will not respond.

‘Having said that, in fairness to Thomas Tuchel, we don’t know what the instruction was for him against Southampton.’

Asked if it was a show of power from Tuchel, Sutton added: ‘Yeah, I think so. He’s done it in the past and he did it there.

‘But it’s not sort of the done thing.’
