Former New York Red Bulls coach Chris Armas has joined Ralf Rangnick’s backroom staff after being granted a work permit to work in the United Kingdom.

Rangnick was appointed United’s interim manager last week and started his reign at the club with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.

The German will only be in the role for around six months but he wants his own backroom staff in order to implement his preferred style of play.

Rangnick has a close relationship with Armas as the pair were both under the Red Bull network at the same time and the American is available after being sacked by Toronto FC.

It comes after Michael Carrick’s departure from Old Trafford, with the United legend announcing his intention to leave the club after the 3-2 win against Arsenal on Thursday.

There were early signs of Rangnick’s philosophy on display against Palace on Sunday, with United pressing the Eagles high in their own half and the back four playing on the halfway line.

It was a marked move away from the football played by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who didn’t have a tangible philosophy to lean on.

The German is expected to make a number of changes to his starting XI for the visit of Young Boys to Old Trafford this week.

United are already through to the last-16 and Rangnick wants to give other players an opportunity to impress.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford are likely to drop out of the starting XI, while Mason Greenwood, Donny van de Beek and Jesse Lingard could be given starts.
