Chelsea are reportedly ready to take up the option of a second year for Thiago Silva after the defender’s strong start to the season.

Eyebrows were raised when Chelsea announced the free transfer back in August, given Silva recently turned 36, but the Brazil international has quickly settled into life in England after a worrying Premier League debut against West Brom.

Silva has impressed as Chelsea have gone unbeaten in their last ten matches in all competitions and the experienced centre-back is set to be rewarded for his outstanding performances at the heart of Frank Lampard’s defence.

According to Sky Sports, Lampard believes Silva’s presence both on the pitch and in the dressing room has been key to Chelsea’s recent success.

The former Paris Saint-Germain captain has made a big impression with Chelsea’s younger players, despite not being fluent in English.

Talks between Chelsea and Silva are not expected to take place until the new year but it looks increasingly likely the Blues will activate the option of another 12 months for the centre-half, to tie him down until 2022.

Speaking to the media ahead of Chelsea’s 2-1 win at Rennes, Mason Mount revealed how he had been picking Silva’s brain following the defender’s arrival in the summer.

Asked whether he was learning from Chelsea’s summer signings, Mount said: ‘Yeah, we all learn stuff off each other.

‘I think when you have players like them two [Kai Havertz and Timo Werner] coming in and Thiago Silva, that’s been through a lot and been at the top of thee game for a long time, you can gain so much experience off just talking to him and speaking to him for five minutes here and there.

‘He’s a brilliant player and has been through it all so players like that coming into this team really helps us.

‘It especially helps us younger players that are coming through and it gives us a lot of experience.’

Silva looks set for one of his toughest tests yet in a Chelsea shirt this weekend, with Lampard’s men preparing to play host to Tottenham for a much-anticipated London derby at Stamford Bridge.

Spurs, managed by former Chelsea head coach Jose Mourinho, have won four games on the bounce heading into the clash.
