Chelsea squad revealed for Brighton Premier League clash with stars set to debut

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard will be without four of his transfer window signings for their Premier League season opener against Brighton.

The Blues have spent around £200million to improve the squad which finished last season in fourth.

Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and Malang Sarr have all moved to Stamford Bridge this summer and more signings are expected.

But for Chelsea’s trip to the Amex Stadium on Monday night, Lampard will have to make do with German duo Werner and Havertz.

Ziyech and Chilwell are nursing knee and heel injuries respectively.

Silva joined up with the team last week for training and is not deemed match fit yet while Sarr is expected to be sent out on loan in the coming days.

Werner and Havertz are expected to make their first starts for the club with Christian Pulisic also pushing for a place in the starting XI after recovering from injury.

Lampard faces a decision over whether to recall Kepa Arrizabalaga or keep faith with Willy Caballero in goal.

After an injury-hit 2019/20 season, Ruben Loftus-Cheek will be eager to get a chance to impress while N’Golo Kante will anchor the midfield with Mateo Kovacic suspended.

Meanwhile, Lampard has defended Chelsea’s transfer market acquisitions after Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hit out at their spending.

He said: “The reality is, with probably the exception of Leicester which was an incredible story, most clubs that win the league in the modern day have recruited well and at a high level money wise.

“You can go through the Liverpool players: Van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho, Keita, Mane, Salah – incredible players that came at a very high price. So Liverpool have done it, and they’ve done it over a period of time.

“It’s par for the course, we all know that. There’s no point doing the maths for it.

“We know Liverpool have spent at a high level, we know they have an incredible coach, we know they have incredible players, and the really smart thing they’ve done is believe in the coach and the system for a number of years.”
