Thomas Tuchel has revealed Frank Lampard went further up in his estimation after he received a message from his Chelsea predecessor following his appointment.

Club legend Lampard was ruthlessly dispensed with on Monday after just 18 months at the helm following an alarming dip in form which had seen Chelsea slip out of title-winning contention.

Tuchel was swiftly installed as his replacement and despite the German’s pedigree, his arrival has been far from universally welcomed by a fanbase divided by the decision to sack Lampard, the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.

Lampard aired his disappointment at having not been afforded the chance to turn things around with a statement issued through the League Manager’s Association on Monday, but he has privately wished Tuchel well, much to the former PSG boss’s delight.

‘It (his view of Lampard) just got bigger when I received a message today in the morning, a personal message to wish me all the best and maybe meet in the future when this is possible.

‘Honestly, nothing has changed there but in the last 72 hours the club made clear to me this is not my fault. I cannot change the situation for him, the decision was made and I was handed the opportunity. I mean what I say.’

Tuchel’s tenure got off to an underwhelming start with a goalless draw at home to Wolves on Wednesday evening that will have done little to enthuse the supporters disenchanted by the nature of Lampard’s sudden departure.

In a message directed at those fans in particular, Tuchel added: ‘I don’t know, I hope not because that would be hard on the team.

‘The fans are so close and behind the team, it makes a big difference. I know it was a big disappointment for the fanbase that Frank was sacked and I said before, I have the biggest respect. I was a huge fan of Frank as a player.

‘The club made clear to me this is not my fault, I cannot change the situation for him. The decision was made and I was handed the opportunity.’
