Reece James and Tammy Abraham have thanked Frank Lampard for his help and support at Chelsea after he was dismissed just 18 months into his reign as manager earlier this afternoon.

Lampard steered Chelsea to a top-four finish last season and led the side on an impressive 14-match unbeaten streak from October through to December this term after being backed with a £200million transfer warchest in the summer.

But a dismal run of just four victories in 11 games followed across a miserable winter period and the 42-year-old left with the worst points-per-game record of any manager in the Roman Abramovich era.

Former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain boss Thomas Tuchel is the frontrunner to take over the reins at Stamford Bridge and it’s understood the club hope to appoint the German before their Premier League clash with Wolves on Wednesday night.

Chelsea right-back James, a product of the club’s academy, quickly became one of Lampard’s most trusted squad members in an outstanding breakthrough season this term and the 21-year-old was rewarded with his first England call-up in October.

Reacting to the news of Lampard’s dismissal, James posted on Instagram: ‘As a Chelsea fan growing up I’ve always looked up to you, idolised you.

‘I can’t explain what it’s been like to play under you, the whole journey has been surreal. I cannot thank you enough for putting your trust into me and giving me the opportunity to play for my boyhood club!

‘Thank you so much for all you have taught me, which I will continue to use throughout the rest of my career.

‘Thank you for giving me the opportunity to live my dream! I’ll forever be thankful.’

Abraham, who scored a hat-trick in Lampard’s final game against Luton Town, reached out to his former manager with a heartfelt message of support and thanks.

‘A role model, a mentor and a great manager. Thank you Gaffer,’ the Chelsea and England striker posted on Instagram.

Chelsea owner Abramovich stressed that Lampard would always be welcomed back to Stamford Bridge with open arms and wished him ‘every success’ with his future endeavours.

‘This was a very difficult decision for the club, not least because I have an excellent personal relationship with Frank and I have the utmost respect for him,’ he told Chelsea’s official website.

‘He is a man of great integrity and has the highest of work ethics. However, under current circumstances we believe it is best to change managers.

‘On behalf of everyone at the club, the board and personally, I would like to thank Frank for his work as head coach and wish him every success in the future.

‘He is an important icon of this great club and his status here remains undiminished. He will always be warmly welcomed back at Stamford Bridge.’
