Thomas Tuchel says he decided to start Timo Werner on the bench for Chelsea’s clash with Manchester United as the striker was feeling ‘a little bit tired’ and needed a break, with Hakim Ziyech coming into the starting XI at Stamford Bridge.

Werner has shown signs that his confidence may be returning in recent weeks under his new manager and started the Blues’ previous three games in all competitions against Newcastle, Southampton and Atletico Madrid.

But fellow summer signing Ziyech, who has had a frustrating debut campaign in England due to injury, supports Olivier Giroud in attack along with Mason Mount.

On his decision to start Ziyech in place of Werner, Tuchel told Sky Sports: ‘He’s a different kind of player, He deserves it now, he had a good impact in the game versus Atletico.

‘It was the feeling to give Timo a little break, to have him from the bench, to have him again fresh also for the fixture against Liverpool.

‘He was also a bit tired. I felt he was a little bit tired after so many games in a row so I give him a rest and let the other guys perform who deserve that.’

In the week, Tuchel revealed he tried to sign Bruno Fernandes while in charge of Paris Saint-Germain and the German knows Chelsea will have to be at their best to stop United’s talisman.

Asked what the best way to deal with Fernandes was, Tuchel joked: ‘Leave him out!

‘That’s the best way for us! Leave him out, give him a rest, the guy needs a rest as he plays all the time!

‘We have guys who can take care of him, we trust N’Golo and Kovacic to take care of him and be close to him.

‘He’s a key player, he’s the accelerator of the game, he’s the guy who delivers passes behind the back.

‘He delivers on point, he just needs one half foot open and he’s a threat with all the guys up front and their speed.

‘So of course he’s an absolute quality player but we also have some quality players.’
