Chelsea and Liverpool are both still in the race to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano, but Bayern Munich are leading the hunt for his signature this summer

The 22-year-old is one of the most in-demand defenders on the planet and is available this summer for just €42.5m (£37.3m), which could prove to be something of a bargain for the France international.

Upamecano has been linked with many of the biggest clubs in Europe, but the Guardian reports that now just three are genuine contenders, with Bayern the favourites to bring the Frenchman in.

Manchester United have also been consistently linked with the centre-back, but their attentions are reportedly elsewhere in terms of summer transfer targets.

The RB Leipzig defender made his France debut in September 2020 and has made three appearances for his country, scoring once.

He only turned 22 in October but has racked up a lot of experience for a centre-back of that age, playing 178 games in his career so far, 102 of those have come with Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has been open about his side’s pursuit of the defender as they look to replace the out-going David Alaba, also mentioning that the Reds and the Blues are keen.

‘In addition to Bayern Munich, there are at least two quite attractive clubs interested [in signing Upamecano],’ he said.

‘The fact is that the player [Upamecano] is interesting, and the fact is that we will almost certainly lose David Alaba at his position. I can’t say if there will be other departures at the position.

‘You have to let things grow in peace. We have a good relationship with Mr Struth [Volker Struth, Upamecano’s agent].

‘The player will know what he wants at some point. We have a good relationship with RB Leipzig as well. I’ve had a conversation with Oliver Mintzlaff [RB Leipzig CEO].

‘When things become concrete, we’ll talk again. The fact that Chelsea and Liverpool are also interested in him proves that he has very good qualities. He can replace David Alaba.’
