After Jorginho came on at half-time, Chelsea began to look far more like the Thomas Tuchel side we’ve become accustomed to seeing in the Premier League and they took control of the game.
Ultimately, it was the clinical finishing of Romelu Lukaku, the dedicated defending from Thiago Silva and the shot-stopping of Edouard Mendy that made the difference on the night.
It was certainly closer than the scoreline suggests, but was nevertheless an important win for Chelsea, who continue to look like genuine title contenders.
It’s not all doom and gloom for Villa, who will have a chance to redeem themselves as they face Everton at Villa Park on Saturday and will have Emi Buendia and Emi Martinez available again.
Chelsea take on Zenit St. Petersburg in the Champions League group stage on Tuesday night and then face Spurs away in the Premier League next Sunday.
