Celebrity X Factor star Levi Davis has come out as bisexual after years of battling a ‘sense of shame’ and feeling that he wasn’t ‘normal’.

The Bath rugby club winger, 22, told his teammates about his sexuality in their group Whatsapp and praised them for their support.

Levi wrote: ‘Hi guys. I just want to tell you something that’s been eating away at me for four years now. I want to be open and honest with you boys, as friends and team-mates. I’m bisexual. It’s something I have known since I was 18.’

He ended the message by joking that, because of their appearance, ‘none of you lot are on my radar so it’s OK.’

Levi told the Mail On Sunday that, in response, the rugby stars began ‘taking the p*** in a good-natured way, which I was relieved about.’

‘I had hidden it well but I couldn’t keep it secret any longer. I had to tell them, all of them, not just a few. I didn’t want it to turn into Chinese whispers,’ he explained.

Levi, who formed the boyband Try Star with fellow rugby stars Thom Evans and Ben Foden on Celebrity X Factor last year, has struggled with his mental health since realising he was bisexual at the age of 18.

The athlete, who was in foster care as a child, battled depression and anxiety in the months leading up to his admission to his rugby teammates and began drinking heavily.

Levi told the Mail: ‘Thankfully we can now discuss mental health more openly. And in the same way, I want people to feel that they can be who they are and that it is OK to be who they are.

‘Hiding who you are can kill you – and has killed people.’

Levi explained that he first realised he’s attracted to both men and women as a teenager.

The athlete – who says he likes ‘athletic girls but not athletic men’ – has had one or two girlfriends and several sexual encounters with men.

He said he’s open to the idea of falling in love with a woman and having children, but could also see himself having a relationship with a man.

Levi is the first professional rugby union player – who is still playing – to come out.

Former Wales captain Gareth Thomas revealed he’s gay back in 2009, telling fans: ‘I’d love for it, in ten years’ time, not to even be an issue in sport.’

Since his interview, Levi has thanked fans and his rugby teammates for their support.

‘Absolute love for all those at Bath rugby that have looked after me, the club will always have my heart,’ he tweeted.

‘I’d just like to thank everyone for their support, it truly does mean the world, time to crack on, this changes absolutely nothing.’
