CDDEP announces new head of South Asia | EurekAlert!

The Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy Inc. (CDDEP) has announced that Dr. Geetanjali Kapoor will serve as its new Head of its South Asia office. Previously a Fellow at CDDEP, Dr. Kapoor brings a wealth of experience as a Public Health Specialist in Infectious Diseases in India and abroad.

At CDDEP, Dr. Kapoor served as antimicrobial resistance (AMR) focal point for implementation of Fleming Fund Regional Grant in Africa, contributed to building partnerships in the Indian subcontinent for expansion of CDDEP’s AMR database ResistanceMap (ResMap), and co-authored ‘State of the World’s Antibiotics Report 2021’, a compilation of global AMR data and correlates.

In her new role as Head of South Asia, Dr. Kapoor will lead the establishment of the world’s first One Health Demographic and Health Surveillance System (DHSS) at CDDEP’s new campus in Bangalore, India. The One Health DHSS will serve as a platform for implementing longitudinal studies across communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Speaking about her new role as Head of South Asia, Dr. Kapoor said, “It is an honor and pleasure to take over this role at CDDEP, which has emerged as a globally renowned and respected research organization through its work in the last decade. Going forward, our team will continue to support efforts to build resilient health and laboratory systems in low and middle-income countries. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed significant gaps in prevention, detection, and our response to infectious diseases. With programs such as the One Health DHSS, we will strive to close these gaps by strengthening our partnerships with national and international stakeholders and conducting high-quality research to guide policy.”

Dr Ramanan Laxminarayan, Founder and Director of CDDEP, said “CDDEP is poised to take on greater challenges in the OneHealth domain.  In this context, Dr Kapoor’s strong microbiology background and experience leading large projects on AMR will be important in shaping our path forward and in leading an expanded team.”
