Carragher identifies the transfers Liverpool must make to follow Konate

Jamie Carragher believes Jurgen Klopp must repeat the trick he has already completed twice in his Liverpool rein and transform the starting XI this summer.

The Reds have already landed Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig in a window which fans will hope sees massive improvement to the playing squad.

Liverpool’s title defence was derailed by a freak run of injuries to defensive players, meaning Klopp was unable to name a consistent line-up for the vast majority of the campaign.

They did manage to secure Champions League football on the final day of the season, thanks to a staggering run of form in the final months.

That will make any transfer negotiations somewhat less complicated as they look to once again challenge Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Carragher thinks that Klopp needs to make two more signings following Konate’s arrival, one to replace Geroginio Wijnaldum and another to add more attacking firepower at the top end of the pitch.

“Through the spine of the team, there should be an addition in every area,” Carragher told the Athletic.

“They’ve got the centre-back in Konate but they also need a midfield player to replace Gini Wijnaldum and an attacking player to add more goals.

“This Liverpool team has been together since 2018 and has been absolutely out of this world. This team isn’t finished but it definitely needs a bit of help.”

“Every few years you need to refresh a team,” he added. “Klopp has done it twice before. When he first came in it was (Joel) Matip, Wijnaldum and (Sadio) Mane in his first summer.

“Then (Mohamed) Salah the following summer, Virgil (van Dijk) the following January and then Alisson in the summer.

“Those three players came in over the same 12-month period. The time has come to get three players in again who are capable of being starters.”

Liverpool landed Konate after triggering the 22-year-old’s £36million release clause right at the start of the window.

And Carragher is on board with that arrival, predicting his transition to Klopp’s set-up could be a smooth one.

“Yeah, I like him. Big, strong, he’s got pace, and he looks the part,” says Carragher. “He’s young and ticks all the boxes. It will help Konate that he’s coming from a team in Leipzig who play a similar way to Liverpool in terms of a high defensive line and pressing.”

The arrival of Konate has added extra uncertainty regarding Nat Phillips’ future. The central defender came into the side at the turn of the year and played a key role in their push for a top-four place.

The legendary Liverpool defender is backing Phillips to be a contributor in the Premier League, whether that is at Anfield, or elsewhere.

“He was the senior member of that centre-back combination during the run-in and deserves so much credit. It will be interesting to see whether he stays as back-up or moves on.
