Canning and bottling plant to serve craft breweries opens in Glasgow

Glasgow-based business Phil Macan has opened its new facility providing bottling and canning services to breweries and drinks businesses throughout Scotland and across the UK.

Phil Macan’s services have been created to meet the demands of craft breweries and small producers by offering competitive packaging solutions to growing drinks businesses.

Production went live in October at Phil Macan’s premises in Queenslie in Glasgow’s east end, with breweries and soft drink businesses having scheduled their first product runs.

Phil Macan’s services cover a variety of drinks from beer, cider and spirits to carbonated soft drinks, tonic and cold-brew coffee.

With a starting capacity of just 1,000 litres, Phil Macan caters for small quantity runs that allow drinks businesses to grow and develop their product lines in a variety of volumes – starting with 250ml, 330ml, 440ml and 500ml cans and 330ml and 500ml bottles.

Free delivery and pick-up options are also available to certain locations.

Phil Macan has been established by Small Batch Group, a family-owned business which also runs the craft brewery Glasgow Beer Works.

Drawing on in-house brewing experience is key to the services provided by the Phil Macan team.

Phil Macan director Allan Rimmer said: “During our own early development in the Scottish craft beer scene, it become apparent to us how useful something like this would be for the craft beer community in Scotland.

“Phil Macan can fill 2,000 bottles and 1,500 cans in an hour.

“The service is straightforward and aims to provide quick turnarounds for brewers who may not want to send their product off site for a few weeks at a time.

“We want to be engaging and keep brewers updated while their beer is with us from collection to delivery of the packaged product.”

The new service offered by Phil Macan has also allowed Glasgow Beer Works to launch their beer range in cans for the first time – which the company believes is important to building a sense of collegiality with its customers.

Small Batch Group MD Jack Madigan said: “We’re excited to have Phil Macan up and running in 2020.

“Despite various challenges earlier in the year we know there is demand out there for bottling and canning services based in Scotland and dedicated to Scottish brewers.

“We’ll be working with customers to ensure their product is on the mark and ready to hit the shelves.

“Scotland’s drinks industry continues to grow and we believe we’re in a great position to help craft drinks businesses grow with it.

“Phil Macan will provide customers with access to the facilities and capability of larger competitors – and for better value.

“We’re also grateful to have received support from Scottish Enterprise through their RSA grant programme.

“Currently Phil Macan is a five-person team but we plan to create another seven jobs in the next three years.”

Stewart Patience from Cuillin Brewery said: “The service was friendly and professional with a quick turnaround.

“Phil Macan were really helpful with the offer of logistical solutions and advice for label specs.

“The cans are looking great and we will definitely work with the team again. It’s excellent to finally have a service like this in Scotland.”
