The Grand National is one of the sporting events to have fallen victim to the coronavirus pandemic, with the race – which was due to have taken place on Saturday 4 April – being cancelled, along with all racing until the end of April.

However it’s not all bad news for fans of the annual Aintree race – as it’s set to go ahead on Saturday in a virtual format instead.

That’s right, the 40 runners and riders who were due to line up at the starting post at Aintree on Saturday will now to so in a virtual version of the Grand National, which will use a series of algorithms and simulations to decide the winner.

But can you bet on it and who is taking part…?

Can you bet on the virtual Grand National?

You will indeed be able to bet on the virtual race, with several major betting companies, including Ladbrokes, William Hill, Coral and Betfair all offering odds on the race.

All profits from the betting will be donated to the NHS Charities Together, which represents more than 150 NHS charities.

Betting and Gaming Council chief executive Michael Dugher said: ‘The virtual Grand National will be one of those moments when we can all come together in celebration, not just for the world’s greatest sporting events but also for the NHS heroes working on the front line to keep us all safe.’
