The actress, who appears in Kenneth Branagh film Belfast, is already credited as a producer on the show alongside fellow actor Sam Heughan, and had wanted to take things a step further .
Caitriona says she learned a lot from Kenneth Brannagh, and appreciated how loyal and respectful he was towards the rest of the cast, and admitted she’d love to ‘grow up just like him’ as a director in the future.
She told SheKnows website: “In terms of Outlander I’ve been knocking on that door wanting to direct for quite some time. It’s been difficult I think.
“I was hoping I’d maybe get to do some extra scenes last season but with the pandemic and being pregnant and being in almost every scene again put a spanner in the works in terms of that.
“It’s unlikely this season I think. These things really need to be planned and I don’t think it’s happening. I’m sad about it. I would love to.”
Caitriona also told the website about dancing with Jamie Dornan in front of Judi Dench for her new movie, and admitted: “It was just a joy on day one. I was nervous about the dancing anyway but that was an added layer to it for certain.”
