Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes was quick to welcome Raphael Varane to the club after the Red Devils announced a £39million agreement with Real Madrid.

The Frenchman is expected in the north-west in the next 48 hours to complete a medical at Carrington after United struck a deal with the La Liga giants.

Varane is set to become United’s second signing of the summer following the £73m acquisition of Jadon Sancho from Dortmund.

Fernandes returned to United training yesterday following his participation at the European Championships and the Portuguese was clearly buoyed by the news on his first day back.

Taking to Instagram, Fernandes wrote: ‘Fresh new start!! Great to be back with my teammates.

‘And what a way to finish the day… Welcome @raphaelvarane 🙏🏼👏🏼💪🏼’

Varane’s arrival will take United’s spending past the £110m mark this summer and the club are expected to sign off departures before they can recruit more of their targets.

Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier is high on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s list but the La Liga giants want £30m for the England international, with United valuing him at roughly half of that.

Solskjaer will also want to sign a midfielder should Paul Pogba depart for Paris Saint-Germain, while Jesse Lingard is another that could raise as much as £30m on the open market.
