Bruno Fernandes has revealed that he was Manchester United’s first-choice penalty kick taker during Wednesday’s last-gasp 2-1 Champions League win over Villarreal.

Fernandes missed a stoppage time spot-kick during United’s 1-0 Premier League defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday, with sections of the fanbase surprised that the 27-year-old was allowed to take it with Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch at the time.

The miss led to speculation that Fernandes could be stripped of penalty-taking duty by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, despite having scored 21 of his 23 penalties for the Red Devils.

However, the former Sporting Lisbon midfielder confirmed that he would have taken the spot-kick should they have been awarded one during the match against the Yellow Submarine and outlined how Solskjaer will decide who takes the penalties in the future.

‘I was on penalties [against Villarreal] but we didn’t get one,’ he told BT Sport.

‘The manager will decide before the game who takes it.’

United came from 1-0 down to beat the current Europa League champions thanks to goals from Alex Telles and a stoppage-time strike from Cristiano Ronaldo.

The visitors had a string of chances at Old Trafford and Manchester United were fortunate to escape with three points, but Fernandes insisted he always kept faith in a victory.

‘I always had the feeling we would win the game, also when they scored I feel we could come again and turn it around,’ he said.

‘After the goal of Alex [Telles], everyone feels the atmosphere was unbelievable. The push from the fans was incredible.’

United will be hoping to use the momentum given to them by Ronaldo’s late winner, when they host Everton in the Premier League on Saturday. But it remains to be seen who will take the penalties this weekend.
