A Ryder Cup legend has launched a sensational attack on Team USA star Brooks Koepka, accusing him of damaging his country’s chances of winning the tournament.

Europe have been dominant over the past two decades, having won seven of the nine competitions held since the turn of the millennium.

The Americans will be hoping to improve their record this time around, and take back the title they lost three years ago when they were soundly beaten at Le Golf National in France in 2018.

But Ian Woosnam, a veteran of eight Ryder Cups as a player and one win as captain in 2006, has claimed Steve Stricker’s side will find it more difficult to do that because of Koepka and his ongoing feud with team-mate Bryson DeChambeau.

Woosnam told Koepka to “get a life” and accused him of not even wanting to play at Whistling Straits this weekend as a result of recent quotes from the American regarding the competition.

“”The article Kopeka has just done, that’s not nice for his team. It’s not good,” Woosnam said.

“He’s basically said ‘I could do without this, it’s getting me out of my routine doing this’. Christ almighty – get a life!

“If I was captain and it was one of my players, I’d be saying: ‘what the f**k you doing?’

“All this crap he’s got going with DeChambeau – is it that bad or is it just false? Either way, it’s not good for Stricker.”

The 63-year-old also took aim at DeChambeau for recent complaints about having damaged hands.

“It wouldn’t surprise me if neither of them played,” he declared. “They’re both making excuses if you ask me.

“Something about his hands? Who’d want to play with him?”

Team USA are favourites to win this edition of the Ryder Cup by virtue of being on home turf and boasting eight of the current top 10 ranked players among their ranks.

But Woosnam has doubted their ability to play together as a team, suggesting Stricker faces a fight to keep his players in line.

He added: “They’re all individuals – and that’s what they’ve always been. I thought they were coming more together over these last few matches, but you’re just seeing some of the articles with these two, you can see it spreading away.

“You hear all this stuff last time between Dustin Johnson and Koepka – is there something going on with [Koepka]?

“Is he one of these guys who likes to stir everything? Is it arrogance? It’s almost like he’s shrugging them all off and saying: ‘I don’t want to be like you’. Well, all the better.

“That’s a psychological advantage straight away. I know we’re underdogs, but in team events we’re even, or further forward.

“Harrington should be saying: ‘Look at them, they’re already arguing’. Let’s see if we can play on that a little bit.”
