A British Airways Boeing 747-400 has burst into flames at a Spanish airport.

The aircraft was being stored at Castellon Airport after it was recently withdrawn from service.

Footage shows the blaze erupting from behind the cockpit as smoke billows out of the plane.

Firefighters extinguished the fire with a hose but the Boeing suffered serious damage.

The airport has confirmed there were no casualties and no one was on board at the time.

They added that the plane was due to be scrapped after it was recently retired.

It is not yet known how the fire started. 

The airport said: ‘Castellón Airport firefighters and Provincial Fire Consortium Castellon worked together to extinguish a fire in an aircraft.

‘There have been no injuries to regret and the fire is already confined.’

Four fire fighters were sent to tackle the blaze and two command units were on hand as back up.

They put out the fire behind the cockpit just before 2pm local time.

Local government in Valencia said: ‘It is a plane without passengers and destined for scrapping.’
