A British arms and drug-smuggling kingpin has been arrested in Brazil for allegedly supplying bombs used by gangs to blow up banks.

Anthony David Schethtman – known as “El Gringo” – claimed to be an intelligence consultant who advised on security for the 2016 Olympics and the 2014 World Cup.

However, wiretaps allegedly revealed he was regularly delivering drugs, bombs and weapons to Rio de Janeiro, Extra reported.

The explosives he sent to gangs were allegedly used during bank robberies.

He was arrested in Rio where he was found driving a stolen car with fake plates, cops claimed.

Police also arrested eight others allegedly linked with a drug-trafficking ring.

It is unclear what prompted the wiretap investigation.

After his arrest, cops said he had a court order against him forbidding him from leaving the country after he allegedly beat his wife and tried to arrange for criminals from his drug-trafficking network to kill her.

Police spokesman Gustavo Rodrigues said: “He was responsible for contacting big guys, that is, big drug dealers, who import these drugs to Brazil at the border. He made it possible for these drug shipments to reach Rio de Janeiro.

Cops claimed they have linked three guns used in violent bank robberies to supplies by “El Gringo”.

Schethtman shared pictures of himself posing with guns on social media.

The authorities believe he worked with the Comando Vermelho, a Brazilian criminal organisation that is focused on drug trafficking and arms smuggling.

The group, previously known as the Red Phalanx, was formed in the late 1970s.

The gang controls large parts of the crime in Rio de Janeiro, fighting occasionally turf wars with other gangs.
