Brighton vs Manchester United LIVE: Result and reaction from Premier League fixture today

United lost to Crystal Palace 3-1 at Old Trafford and looked well off the pace, so they will be determined to put that right here. But they face a sharp-looking Brighton side who fought well against Chelsea on the opening weekend before dismantling Newcastle 3-0 at St James’ Park.

Carlo Ancelotti backs Jordan Pickford in his pre-match interview. The focus will be on the goalkeeper again today after his performance against Fleetwood in midweek.

Everton, though, have started the season very well, and are looking to make it three wins from three this afternoon. Their new additions, notably James Rodriguez, have started well.

But Palace will look to make life difficult, having won their first two games, too. The last was a 3-1 victory at Old Trafford, so they should be in confident mood.

We’re turning our attention away from one of the craziest Premier League games in years now. Crystal Palace and Everton have a lot to live up to if they’re to match that entertainment.

Bruno Fernandes, speaking to BT Sport: “It was a difficult game, we know Brighton have a really good team. They can play, they’re aggressive. We leave so many spaces for them to play. We gave away two goals, and we made some mistakes. But big teams need to believe until the end. Now we need to look forward and think about doing much better. Brighton did very well but maybe because we were not aggressive as we want. Sometimes you have to have luck.”

The narrative will inevitably be that United showed “great character”, but they were often outplayed by Brighton. They’re still a long, long way off the best teams in the league and there will inevitably be more calls for signings between now and the close of the transfer window.

United win, then, but it’s about as unconvincing as victories get. Brighton were the far better side and looked to have earned a point late on. But that late penalty drama has given the visitors the three points. Solskjaer will be relieved, but fully aware of how bad a performance this was. Brighton, meanwhile, were excellent and, once they’ve got over demoralising manner of the defeat, will have plenty to feel positive about.

Fernandes, clinical as ever, buries the penalty. United celebrate, and the final whistle is blown immediately. Maupay looks distraught, as does Graham Potter. What an end to a remarkable game.

An incredible end to the game! United have a penalty and Brighton might have somehow managed to throw it away. Fernandes will take what seems like his 54th penalty in a United shirt…
