Brexit betrayal unmasked: Remainer MP attacked Swinson's party before joining Lib Dems

Campaign flyers show how the MP, who recently switched to the Liberal Democrats, launched a series of attacks on her new party when she was trying to persuade voters to send her to Parliament as a Tory. Dr Wollaston yesterday insisted her “values haven’t changed” as she attended Lib Dem conference as the party plotted to cancel Brexit.

But the Totnes MP attacked the European Union every single time she stood in an election.

Dr Wollaston defected to Change UK in February before joining the Liberal Democrats on in August.

She refused to allow voters a say on the defections despite previously supporting a bill calling for MPs who crossed the floor to face an automatic by-election.

Dr Wollaston was originally chosen as the Conservative Party candidate for the Devon seat in 2009 through an unusual postal vote contest open to every voter in the constituency.

The GP told voters she was “fiercely opposed” to EU integration in a leaflet that was enclosed with that ballot paper.

A year later at the general election she called for powers to be “repatriated from Europe” and warned voters to “beware” of the Liberal Democrats and their pro-EU policies.

She wrote on her website: “I want to see greater power for local communities and and responsibility repatriated from Europe. I believe we need politicians with real life experience and integrity and support the Conservatives’ view that dishonest politicians should be sacked.

“Who wants a federal Europe or to join the European Single Currency? No one that I have met. To anyone who feels that political parties are all the same, I would say look at our policies on Europe and beware the slide to federalism under Labour and the Lib Dems.”

In another post, she wrote: “Unlike the LibDems, we will never give up the pound to join the Euro, and we will make it impossible for any future government to do so without a referendum.”

In 2015 she promised voters would be given the “final say” on EU membership in a “straightforward in/out referendum” on EU membership and in 2017 she promised to respect that result and “make a success of Brexit”.

Lib Dems yesterday threatened to overturn Brexit on day one in power if they win the next election.

Senior Conservative Mark Harper said: “Sarah made clear promises and should be working to deliver on those commitments rather than betraying her voters.

“The Lib Dems do not respect the result of the EU referendum and are working to stop Brexit altogether.”
