Brendan Rodgers has classily praised Mikel Arteta ‘fantastic’ work as Arsenal manager after leading his Leicester City side to a 1-0 win at the Emirates on Sunday night.

The Foxes beat the Gunners away from home in the league for the first time in 47 years as Jamie Vardy’s header secured all three points with 15 minutes to go.

It was a backs-to-the-wall display from Rodgers’ team, who barely saw any of the ball in the first half.

Arteta felt aggrieved that Alexandre Lacazette’s goal was ruled out in the early stages as Granit Xhaka was adjudged to have impeded goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel while standing in an offside position.

Frenchman Lacazette also wasted a big chance on the half-hour mark to put his side ahead as he failed to connect properly with Kieran Tierney’s cross.

Arsenal’s creativity dried up in the second half which encouraged the Foxes to venture forward.

Jamie Vardy’s introduction after 60 minutes spelt trouble for the Gunners, and it wasn’t long before he grabbed his goal and Leicester’s winner after converting from Cengiz Under’s cutback.

After a promising start to the campaign, Arsenal have now lost three of their last four matches in the Premier League.

However, speaking after the game, Rodgers was full of praise for Arteta, despite inflicting a league defeat on his opposite number at the Emirates for the first time in 2020.

‘Mikel’s done a fantastic job here, admired as a young manager coming in on his first job, I think he’s doing great,’ Rodgers said.

‘For us to be the first team to win here [at the Emirates] this calendar year really shows the quality of his work.’
