Boris Johnson is to hold a press conference at Downing Street as the Omicron variant of Covid-19 continues to spread.

The Prime Minister will chair the event at 6pm amid speculation that the Government is preparing to shift to Plan B restrictions to save Christmas from lockdown curbs.

It also comes amid concern that the vaccine booster programme is slowing.

Moving to Plan B could include Covid passes for events, more home-working and mandated mask-wearing.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid confirmed that there is community transmission across all regions of England and Stormont said last night the strain had reached Northern Ireland.

Cases have already been recorded in Scotland and Wales.

Scientific advisers from SAGE, the government advisory group, believe that Omicron infections in the UK are on course to double every three days.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, SAGE’s Professor Neil Ferguson said: “[Omicron] is likely to overtake Delta before Christmas at this rate, precisely when is hard to say.”

The PM is also likely to face further questions about Christmas parties at Downing Street last year when the country faced tough lockdown curbs.
