The right-wing populist reportedly chuckled during a live broadcast as he told viewers that he had “mould” in his lungs.
“I just did a blood test. I was feeling kind of weak yesterday. They found a bit of infection also. Now I’m on antibiotics,” he said.
The 65-year-old added: “After 20 days indoors, I have other problems. I have mould in my lungs.”
Bolsonaro told journalists that he had tested positive for the virus on July 7.
He has repeatedly downplayed the virus, claiming that he would “feel nothing” if he caught it and at one point described it as a “little flu.”
In March, Brazil’s president claimed that “as an athlete” he would have “nothing to worry about” were he to contract the coronavirus as he pushed back against lockdown measures.
After appearing at an anti-lockdown rally in April, he reportedly told TV Brasil: “I would feel nothing, or it would be at most just a little flu or a little cold.”
He also bragged about taking hydroxychloroquine, an anti-malarial drug with unproven effectiveness against Covid-19. The drug can be used to help treat lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.
“There is no reason to keep talking about hydroxychloroquine for Covid-19,” Dr Carlos del Rio, an infectious disease physician told NBC.
Wife Michelle tested positive for coronavirus on Thursday, just days after the 65-year-old tested negative on Saturday.
On Wednesday, the first lady was pictured donning a face mask at an event in Brasilia where she spoke about a rights initiative for women in rural and indigenous communities.
The event was the populist’s first following his negative test.
A fifth member of Bolsonaro’s cabinet is self-quarantining after testing positive for the virus, Voice of America reports.
Two government ministers tested positive for coronavirus last week.
Brazil is now reporting more than 2.5million coronavirus cases – second to only the US. Covid-19 has killed more than 90,000 people in the country.
