Borussia Dortmund chief speaks out on Jadon Sancho’s tough start at Manchester United

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has admitted it ‘hurts his soul’ to see Jadon Sancho struggling after his big money move to Manchester United in the summer.

Sancho is yet to nail down a spot in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team at Old Trafford, despite Marcus Rashford missing the early weeks of the season as he continues his recovery from shoulder surgery.

When he’s got the chance on the pitch, Sancho has come under fire from large parts of the Man United fan base for failing to deliver the cutting edge that many expected of him after the club spent a reported £70m on the England international.

But Watzke believes the reason for Sancho’s early season struggles is partly down to his lack of stability in Gareth Southgate’s England team.

‘I love Jadon. When you see him playing you get tears in your eyes,’ he said.

‘It hurts my soul that he is given so little consideration. I think his problem is that he’s not set in the English national team.’

Speaking after last week’s Carabao Cup defeat to West Ham, Solskjaer admitted that both Sancho and his fellow United teammate Donny Van De Beek lacked quality at this current moment.

‘I can’t complain about the effort. It has something to do with the rhythm, the confidence,’ Solskjaer said via Viaplay.

‘Their best form isn’t there as they haven’t played much. Good for them to get time, but we didn’t get the result.

‘So like I said, there was a bit lacking in terms of quality, but not in terms of effort.’

Sancho will be hoping to pick his form up in the coming games against Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday night and during the Premier League clash against Everton on Saturday.
