Boris Johnson sparks Twitterstorm as he makes staunch vow that UK will leave on October 31

The Prime Minister made the remarks after Government lawyers told a Scottish court they would obey the law and request an extension if required. This followed EU officials rejecting Britain’s proposals to the withdrawal agreement, though some welcomed the suggestion. Mr Johnson wrote: “New deal or no deal – but no delay.

“#GetBrexitDone #Leave Oct31”.

The tweet was followed by a Union Jack emoji.

A bill by pro-Remain MPs made by Former Shadow Foreign Secretary Hilary Benn requires Mr Johnson to request an extension if he does not reach an agreement by October 19.

Government papers said Mr Johnson accepts “he is subject to the public law principle that he cannot frustrate its purpose or the purpose of its provisions”.

It adds: “Thus he cannot act so as to prevent the letter requesting the specified extension in the act from being sent.”

Speculation in Westminster suggests the Prime Minister has found a legal loophole to get around the act.
