SHOPS promise “unmissable deals” on Black Friday, but offers may not be what they seem.
Experts at Which? say most items will be cheaper or the same price at other times of the year, as stores fuel spending with a cycle of holding sales before hiking prices. Here, we predict this year’s reductions and show you how to spot genuine bargains.
Wireless printer – Argos
This Brother MFC-J5335DW printer switches from costing £199.99 to £129.99 every few months, according to the Argos tracking site pricehistory.co.uk.
It is currently at £199.99 and my money’s on it going back down during this Black Friday week.
HIGHEST PRICE: £199.99
LOWEST PRICE: £129.99
Fire tablets – Amazon
The all-new Fire 7 Tablet with 16GB storage normally costs £49.99 on Amazon. In August and October it was down to £34.99.
But it has gone one better this week as you can now grab it for a purse-friendly £29.99. That is a top price for a tablet compared to expensive iPads.
HIGHEST PRICE: £49.99
LOWEST PRICE: £29.99
Headphones – Very
These Beats by Dre headphones were reduced from £89.99 to £49.99 in Very’s 2018 Black Friday sale. The same pair are currently priced at £79.99, reduced from £84.99.
The Pricesearcher website shows that the item has cost between £80 and £90 all year, so the £40 reduction was pretty good. Hold out and hope for a similar discount if you are planning on buying a set.
HIGHEST PRICE: £89.99
LOWEST PRICE: £49.99
Hybrid bike – Halfords
The Pendleton Somerby Hybrid Bike was last year reduced from £280 to £224 for Black Friday. Similar offers have been made in the past – in 2016 the same bike was reduced from £280 to £230.
The majority of colours were being sold at £280 again this week, so if you are looking for a new pair of wheels, wait for that £50 discount.
HIGHEST PRICE: £280
LOWEST PRICE: £224
Water flosser – Superdrug
Last year Superdrug slashed this Waterpik flosser – an electric gadget for flossing teeth – from £54.99 to £36.29.
This week it already had an early Black Friday deal reducing the same top price to £35.99 – although only members of its loyalty club can claim it. It is not a bad deal, but Boots is offering it cheaper for £34.99.
HIGHEST PRICE: £54.99
LOWEST PRICE: £34.99
Mixer – Currys PC World
The Kitchenaid artisan stand mixer went from £549 to £274 at Currys PC World last Black Friday. This year it is already advertised as a Black Friday deal, with the cost slashed from £499 to £279.
Currys openly states this product was sold for just four weeks at the higher price prior to being put on sale. Always look at the price info in small print by the sale price.
HIGHEST PRICE: £549
LOWEST PRICE: £274
Eau de toilette – Boots
The high street chain reduced Paco Rabanne’s One Million Eau de Toilette for men (100ml) to £39.90 on Black Friday last year, down from £66.50.
This week, it reduced the same fragrance from £68 to £39.90 in almost the same deal. It is actually a good offer, as shops normally charge around £50 or even £60 for it.
HIGHEST PRICE: £68
LOWEST PRICE: £39.90
Hair straightener – John Lewis
The store chain cut the price of the GHD Original straightener from £109 to £79 last Black Friday.
Now it’s up to £109, and likely to go down at least £30 over the next week.
HIGHEST PRICE: £109
LOWEST PRICE: £79
Make-up set – Superdrug
This chocolate-themed make-up gift set was last year sold at half-price for £40 on Black Friday.
It is currently on offer for £60, down from £80 – not a great deal without further reduction. Wait before buying.
HIGHEST PRICE: £80
LOWEST PRICE: £40
Scooter – Smyths
This G-start electric blue scooter was on offer for £99.99, down from £129.99 last Black Friday.
This week it was currently listed for £129.99 again, so hold out for a discount.
HIGHEST PRICE: £129.99
LOWEST PRICE: £99.99
How to spot genuine bargains
- Start by finding all current prices by using a decent price comparison site, such as Pricesearcher for Google Shopping.
- Check the price history of that item. Various websites help you do this. CamelCamelCamel tracks prices on Amazon. Simply type in the name of the product or copy a link and the site reveals what it sold for previously. You can do the same with Argos products on pricehistory.co.uk.
- If that doesn’t work, type the name of the product into Google along with “Black Friday deals”. You should soon see what the reductions were on various news websites.
- Once you have found a good deal, scan the internet for vouchers and discount codes. Use cashback sites to get even more money off.
