Big Little Lies Fans, Meet Nicole Kidman's The Expatriates

Those eagerly awaiting the return of Big Little Lies to our screens next year, get ready to put The Expatriates at the top of your must-binge list. Set to be Amazon’s answer to the multi-award-winning drama, and with Nicole Kidman on board as executive producer (but no word as yet on whether she will also star in it), the drama will be “similar in tone”, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The streaming platform has commissioned a straight-to-series order for the project, which will be based on Janice Y.K. Lee’s book of the same name. “Set against the backdrop of ‘The Vertical City’ of Hong Kong, The Expatriates is a drama series that explores the lives of a close-knit expatriate community: where affluence is celebrated, friendships are intense but knowingly temporary, and personal lives, deaths and marriages are played out publicly — then retold with glee,” describes Amazon of the show’s plot.

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, has discussed a push for more female-led programming since she took the helm of the media giant’s television and film production earlier this year. And The Expatriates looks like a strong – and darkly dramatic – start. “The story weaves an addictive tapestry that follows a group of complex women and their lives as outsiders in Hong Kong,” says Salke. “It’s a compelling exploration of the strength of these women as they persevere through struggles with marriage, career, parenting and unimaginable loss.”
