Ben White's Arsenal arrival proves Arsene Wenger mistake has continued under Mikel Arteta

Arsenal’s £50million capture of Brighton defender Ben White will go some way to improving the Gunners’ defence. With experienced figures such as Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny no longer at the club, the north London side have tried and failed to find suitable replacements over a number of years.

White is the 11th senior centre-back Arsenal have signed in the past seven years, a process which has set the club back around £190million.

It is safe to say that the vast majority of these purchases have not worked out for the better, with Arsenal still struggling to keep teams at bay as well as stamping out defensive errors.

Prior to White’s arrival, the Gunners have splashed out £35million on Shokdran Mustafi, £28million for William Saliba, £25million for Gabriel Magalhaes, £17.6million on Sokratis, £16million on Callum Chambers, £11.3million on Gabriel Paulista, £11million on Pablo Mari, £8m on David Luiz, £2million on Kostas Mavropanos and £2million on Rob Holding.

The Gunners have earned back a small portion of their vast outgoings by offloading Gabriel Paulista, who joined Valencia for a reported fee of £10m four years ago.

Although central defence has proven to be a problem position for the club, the full-back department has been significantly improved by Kieran Tierney in the last couple of years.

The Scottish left-back signed from Celtic in 2019 and has become a first-team regular in the side, earning high praise from a number of individuals in the process.

On occasions, Bukayo Saka has also filled in as a full-back and displayed his creativity when building from the back for the Gunners.

A new right-back could well be arriving in the coming weeks, though, as there is a growing expectation that Hector Bellerin could be leaving the club.
