Ben Chilwell has praised the impact of Thiago Silva at Chelsea, saying the Brazilian sets the standard for quality after the Blues thrashed Crystal Palace 4-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Frank Lampard’s side had a sluggish start against the Eagles, with the match goalless at half-time, but they sprung into life in the second period.

Chilwell himself opened the scoring, before Kurt Zouma and a brace from Jorginho completed the comfortable win.

While the Blues did not have a lot of defending to do against a non-threatening Palace side, Chilwell picked out Silva for special praise for how he has conducted himself since arriving from Paris Saint-Germain.

‘Ever since he came in the building, when he is in the room he has a presence about him,’ Chilwell told the BBC.

‘He makes everyone want to do well. Standards will never slip, he demands quality and he assures the whole.’

The England international enjoyed a dream league debut for his new club, not only scoring, but providing the assist for Zouma’s goal and keeping a clean sheet.

The 23-year-old admits the first half was below-par but feels the second was the perfect way to head into the upcoming international break.

‘The first half was frustrating but we didn’t really create enough,’ said Chilwell. ‘At half time we spoke about being a bit more creative and taking a few more chances in the final third and we came out sharp in the second half and scored four very good goals.

‘It’s the same for all team but there’s not really been a pre-season it’s going to take a few weeks for everyone to bed in and in the second half today I think we showed that it is starting to gel together nicely.

‘I spoke to the manager before I came and also saw the talent he had brought in and it was just a very exciting opportunity for me to come to a team that everyone thinks should be winning trophies.

“The biggest plus from today – scoring four goals is great but a clean sheet is perfect for us going into the international break. It’s a good sign of things to come.’
