Ben Affleck talks of his hopes for a 'meaningful and committed' relationship

Ben Affleck has opened up about his hopes for the future after he admitted that divorcing Jennifer Garner was his biggest regret in life.

Speaking to Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, Affleck, 47, described how he’d like his life to look in five years.

‘I would love to have a relationship that is deeply meaningful and one to which I could be deeply committed,’ he said.

He continued: ‘Five years from now Ben Affleck is sober and happy and sees his kids three-and-a-half days a week and has made three or four movies that are interesting to him. I directed two [movies] that he is hopefully proud of and is in a healthy, stable, loving, committed relationship.’

While the Argo star turned to dating app Raya last year to find love, he says he’s no longer on any dating apps and doesn’t want to just date a bunch of people.

‘I am not on any of them,’ the Gone Girl star said. ‘I don’t have judgment for people who are, great. I know people who are on them and have a fun time but that’s not me.

‘I don’t really see the virtue in, like, idle relationships,’ he explained. ‘[You] see a bunch of people and date a bunch of people. And that – that doesn’t so much interest me.’

Affleck’s most meaningful relationship post-marriage was with SNL producer Lindsay Shookus who he dated on and off for two years until 2019. He also enjoyed a short romance with model Shauna Sexton.

Garner meanwhile has moved on with businessman John Miller.

Affleck spoke openly earlier this week in an interview published by The New York Times about his divorce from Garner being ‘the biggest regret of my life’.

The pair married in 2005 and separated in 2015 with reports of Affleck having an affair with the family’s nanny, Christine Ouzounian, emerging days after news of the split.

After their divorce in 2018, Garner spoke out to insist that the nanny had nothing to do with the couple’s decision to separate.

‘Let me just tell you something,’ Garner told Vanity Fair. ‘We had been separated for months before I ever heard about the nanny. She had nothing to with our decision to divorce. She was not a part of the equation.’

Reflecting on his past Affleck told Sawyer: ‘There are things that I would love to go back and change. I have regrets,

‘I have made plenty of mistakes, some big some small. I wish I could go back in time and change all kinds of things but I can’t.’

The former couple have three children together; Violet, 14, Seraphina, 11 and Samuel, seven and Affleck works hard on co-parenting harmoniously with his ex-wife.

‘I go to church with my kids – because it was important to Jennifer. And now I go, too, and I like it quite a bit,’ he said.

‘I’d like to find some sort of sense of meaning and purpose.’ he added.

‘I’m enormously lucky. I have three of the most fabulous children you’ll ever see,’ he said. ‘I love them to death. They’re my joy. They’re my life.’

Touching on his past struggles with substance abuse Affleck said he is continuing to work on his mental health and sobriety.

‘I get depressed. I take antidepressants. They are very helpful for me,’ he revealed. ‘I’ve taken them since I was 26 years old, various different kinds, and I switch and try this or that. … Often times they won’t tell you about some awful side effects and you come back and say, “Why am I 60 pounds heavier?” And they are like, “Oh you gained a little weight.”‘

The actor is opening up about his battles while promoting his new film The Way Back, in which he plays Jack Cunningham, a high school basketball coach fighting alcoholism.
