KEEPING cosy this winter need not be costly. As temperatures drop, many of us spend a fortune on heating and maybe snug curtains or duvets.
But you can stay warm for less with my seasonal tips . . .
HANG IN THERE: Some 40 per cent of heat lost from homes is via windows and doors — but forget new curtains (a pair from Next will cost at least £25) and hang a PVC shower curtain (I like Poundland’s) inside your existing curtains. It traps air and stops heat escaping. SAVE: up to £25 or more
MIND THE GAPS: Those under doors are a menace for draining heat and cash — but instead of buying draught excluders (from £16 at Dunelm, use an old rug hung over the back of it or a single old curtain strung across the frame. I found curtains in my local charity shop for £5 per pair — one for the front and back door. SAVE: £11
SOUP UP YOUR DAY: A piping-hot homemade soup — served with crusty bread, of course — works wonders on a chilly evening. But making it need not be a chore. I love the Salter Electric Soup Maker, £39.99, on Amazon — it is a cheaper, more compact alternative to one from Cuisinart, £97.40, and whips up smooth or chunky soup in a jiffy, plus it comes with a handy recipe book. SAVE: £57.41
GET TUCKED UP: Been enjoying your lighter, summer duvet? Or perhaps yours is just not thick enough to keep you nice and warm when it gets seriously cold at night. Well, don’t panic that you need to fork out for an expensive, heavy winter tog to get a good sleep.
Instead, you can easily just layer a fleece blanket over your usual duvet to make it extra-warm, because warm air is more easily trapped in fleece fibres. If you don’t have one to hand, Dunelm’s super-soft fleece throw is just £6 — a steal compared with £30 for a double Silentnight Super Snuggle 15-tog duvet at Argos. SAVE: £24
