Manchester City star Aymeric Laporte was close to tears after he was forced to limp off during his side’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid.

The Frenchman has suffered an injury-hit campaign and has been managing his minutes since making a long-awaited return from a knee problem in late January.

Laporte requested to come off against Leicester City on Saturday in a bid to save himself for tonight’s clash against Madrid at the Bernabeu but he lasted just over 30 minutes before being forced off.

The defender went down off the ball and had to be comforted by team-mates as Fernandinho warmed up to replace him on the sidelines.

Laporte did manage to walk off the pitch but he was hobbling on the sidelines and was visibly upset as the game continued.

City and Madrid entered the break goalless but both sides came close to breaking the deadlock.

Ederson made a fine save from a Karim Benzema header that looked destined to find the bottom corner, while Sergio Ramos cleared off the line from a Gabriel Jesus effort.
