Audiences know who to call! Ghostbusters: Afterlife dethrones Marvel’s Eternals as it debuts at the top of the box office










Fans everywhere are calling the Ghostbusters, and it shows in the box office numbers. 

Ghostbusters: Afterlife debuted at the top spot of the domestic box office in its opening weekend, The Hollywood Reporter reported.

The film raked in $44 million from the 4,315 North American theaters it played in. The film also brought in $16 million from 31 overseas markets.

The latest installment in the Ghostbusters franchise is a sequel to the 1984 movie. It is directed by Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman, who helmed the original film. 

Ghostbusters: Afterlife stars a number of talented actors and actresses including Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard, Anchorman actor Paul Rudd and several stars from the original movie including Annie Potts, Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd. 

It centers around a single mom and her two children that arrive in a town and learn about their connection to the original team of Ghostbusters.

Members of the original cast recently opened up about becoming Ghostbusters again nearly 40 years after the original movie opened. 

Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore in the original movies, said that he never thought it would happen. 

‘I never thought we would [be back]. Until I got there and I realized it’s actually happening,’ the actor said. ‘But I will say, when I got in the suit, and Bill and Dan and Sigourney. It was almost spiritual, man. I was almost in tears. It was great.’ 

This movie is the first in the series since the female-lead 2016 Ghostbusters which proved to be a critical and commercial failure.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife knocked Marvel’s Eternals out of the top spot which it held for back to back weekends. In it’s third weekend the movie made just under $11 million according to Box Office Pro.

Another much-anticipated film that debuted this weekend was King Richard, the biopic centered around Venus and Serena Williams and their unconventional father, Richard.  

It made just $5.7 million from the 3,302 locations it played in.
